Lyrics are godly – music is divine and rendition touches you so deep that you are left with a blissful feel ! The song Ninnai Charanadainthen Kannamma from Bharathi- rendered by Bombay Jayashree – when listened with eyes closed brings tears. All said and done, though am a Rah maniac I’d still put the soul stirring works of Raja ahead. Thats the change Rahman has brought about. When Rahman entered the trade, Hindi audience started lapping up tamil music. When Raja came and Stromed the tamil film music, our people started getting glued to our own tamil music. One of my friends used to say this : In the ages before Raja, Tamil film music was totally classical and college goers during that period used to lap up with the Hindi film songs from Kishore, Mukesh,Rafi et all. You would have heard around 100 songs with similar rhythm but the way he has shown varieties in handling melodies would just mesmerise listeners. For instance Raasave unnai vida maaten from Aranmanai kili. There are other songs where the rhythm is trademark Raja.
While its tough even to imitate that, what to say of the person who creates these tunes. Some examples being Aagaya vennilave tharai meedhu vandhadheno., Paartha Vizhi paartha padi. In some songs, the way he handles the Rhythm is interesting. He sure is endowed with His complete grace. World knows it and there is nothing new when i say, Raja is a genius. His talent often baffles me, how can such a talent remain inside one person. To my astonishment, Raja has not stuck to one pattern while handling a Raga. The reason why i do this is to identify patterns in the way music directors handle a classical raga. I have currently involved myself in aggregating songs in same raga together and creating a comprehensive directory listing. But i can of course write my favorite ones still i feel the list would be incomplete.
If i sought out to write the best songs of Raja, i would definitely end up being incomplete.
